WHITBY -- The Region of Durham is inviting residents to pick up free compost in appreciation of a continued community-wide commitment to the regional organics collection program.
Residents should take a shovel and containers to carry compost, which has been made from organics collected in the Region’s curbside green bin and leaf and yard waste programs. Compost is available on a first-come, first served basis and is limited to four blue boxes of compost per vehicle.
Green bins, blue boxes and backyard composters will also be available for purchase (cash only), and broken bins can be exchanged for free.
Residents are also encouraged to take a non-perishable food item, to be donated to a local food bank (double check expiration dates on food items).
The compost giveaway event will be held on Saturday, May 7 from 8 a.m. to noon, rain or shine, at the operations centre, 333 McKinney Dr., Whitby. Visit www.durham.ca/wasteevents for more information.
